A Good Spring Smallmouth

This afternoon a wind was blowing and it was cloudy. Perfect weather for bass. I  went to a big lake, the first time this year to fish that water. It is unusual as it is fairly close and has great fishing. A bug went on that looked half crayfish, half dragonfly nymph.
   A few casts in a notably productive area went untouched. This particular location has given me several smallmouth over three pounds and a duo of largemouth exceeding five. A 27 inch pickerel and probably 5,000 perch were also landed there. It was with little surprise then, when the fly was picked up with a light take reminiscent of a white perch. The first ten seconds of fight were also characteristic. Then it simply got bigger.

The fish that then jumped was by no means a small one. The big bronze smallmouth repeated the spectacle twice and then fought hard. They never give up easily The fish I landed was the best on a fly for me in this lake to date. The other big boys were eaters of soft plastics and spinners baits.
