It Made All the Difference

I headed out today to examine some streams to see how the rain and warm weather had treated them. A few had simply stayed frozen, in one the ice had been forced to the bottom by the run off, certainly a bad situation for the resident fish, and one, the one I visited on Friday, was now ice fry. I proceeded to fish the pink worm in the deep holes and catch the occasional native gem. At one point I was dredging the depths of a trough when the leader jumped upstream. I set the hook and was immediately aware it was a nice fish. I tell you, the fight of even a tiny Native is so much more fun on the new rod. This big one put up a scrap

I would say it was a surprisingly good day, especially for this time of year. Perhaps spring will be early this year. The skunk cabbages are popping out in the sunlight, and some of the song birds that are active typically aren't around right now.

Add nice wet moss = happy brooky

  1. Wow you had a much better day than I did today! Almost all of those brookies were pretty good size and quite pretty.
I went out today and got skunked, but I kind of expected it with the swollen stream and cool temps. I was hoping for something, but I am very inexperienced when it comes to winter fly fishing so I didn't know where the brookies were holding. I just fished the usual pools and runs and avoided the fast water. Do you think I got skunked because I didn't use a worm fly (I used an olive bugger)?
I still had a great time because it was great to be out on the stream after a few months off.

    1. Thank you.

It depends on the size of the bugger, but I tend not to use drab colors at all in the winter. My best all around fly this time of year is the silk worm, and the best dry fly is the Royal Wulff. As far as the places you fished you were on track. Just try to dead drift when the water is very cold.

    2. You are probably right about the olive not being a good color, but I didn't have any bright colors left in my fly box. I really need to start tying! Thanks for the help.

  2. I think I've seen that brooky before. They do love that red worm. Thanks for the adventure.
    Tie, fish and write on...
