This morning had one good thing in the forecast: no wind. That told me I should get back out after the freshwater cows of CT. I waited quite a while for some grazers to show up, and eventually the did. They were all good fish, but what one, if any, would I catch?
Let's try for the one on the far right, shall we? He took and I missed. He did not seem to spook though. The fish all continued to feed. They moved around a lot, so I'm not sure which of those fish I ended up casting to next. I was lucky enough that it tilted down and took.
The fight was not as nail biting as carp fights usually are, I didn't even get down to my backing. That being said it was no easy battle. It lasted probably fifteen minutes. The fish weaved in and out of the rocks in front of me and I had to avoid getting the leader caught up on them. Eventually I pulled the fish onto a sand bar and tailed it. Boy is it gorgeous.
The yellow and orange of this carp are particularly bright, and it has some isolated silver scales. Just
Maybe I'll go back later.
Hell ya, man! Carp on the fly is the cat's ass! Those things pullllll.
ReplyDeleteOne of the funnest thing you can do with a fly rod!
DeleteOh my gosh - what a gorgeous fish. It's amazing how fish like carp, even suckers are so frowned upon. They sure are a challenge to get to take and an even bigger challenge to land - amazing fish!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteThey are beautiful. They are just as admirable in my eyes as are trout.

DeleteThat was great!!! Looks bigger than last years.
ReplyDeleteTie, fish, write and photo on...
Maybe. The rod is different. It certainly seemed heavier but then again it's the first fish over a few ounces I've caught this year!
DeleteDude! Awesome fish!! What a beast. They look like large rocks in the water. Well done!
ReplyDeleteThanks,
DeleteThey do look like rocks. Big, lumbering, living rocks made of pure gold!

ReplyDeleteI can hear that drag singing from here, had to be super fun, congrats ---thanks for sharing
Haha thanks.
DeleteI thought of this after going to the grocery store this morning... There was a carp about the size of the one you just caught in the fish department. Whole fish. Pretty spendy to, I want to say it was like 8 bucks a pound. "Wild" caught as well. I was so surprised I asked the fish shop worker and she said she'd never seen one in there before and had no idea what it about. Just showed up and so they stocked it... Any one ever see that before? Carp in the grocery store? Unreal!
ReplyDeleteWeird...
DeleteI enjoyed your post and the wonderful photos. Although I have fly fished for over 60 years, I have never fished for carp. Very interesting indeed! I may give it a try when we return to Italy this summer. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI highly recommend it, and I wish you luck if you do.
