Many of the patterns designed up on and around New York's Ausable are ones that I use often. Patterns designed by Fran Betters and Rich Garfield, with slight edits, often suit my needs down here in Connecticut.

Great post. Some great flies have certainly come about as a result of that river. What's the recipe for the ugly? I definitely have to make a brookie trip to the Adirondacks this summer. Unfortunately, I have heard that the ausable is not what it used to be and is mostly stockers, but not sure how accurate that source is.

ReplyDeleteMy ugly is muskrat tail, squirrel body, tinsel, and grizzly schlappen (small enough to fit obviously) and a crap load of weight.
I have only ever heard good things about the Ausable, mostly west branch. It still has PLENTY of wild fish.

Those old Betters/Garfield ties are amazing. They fish great for anything... but wild fish... WOW :)
