Carpy Morning

This was a gorgeous morning to fish. I went to the lake, and was greeted by an expanse of water coated with midges and dimpled by rising fish. As I was going after carp, the only dries I had were large ones. I still managed to get some little smallmouth bass to take.

The sunrise was remarkable, and as the light of the new day filtered through the cloud cover the shallows began to show there bounty. The first fish I spotted disturbing the bottom was of the spiny whiskered kind. One cast with a dragonfly nymph brought a nice bullhead to hand.

Then I found my target. Unfortunately this school was spooked when a bluegill hiding among them took the fly first. Before they all left I did manage to get one of the bass that was following them to take.

Then I found another school of feeding carp, digging hard at the bottom. Of the three, I chose the biggest fish to target. The main reason for this was not that it was the biggest but that it has a crook back, making it an easily identifiable fish. I made the cast, and my luck turned when the fish did to eat my fly. I so love carp.

  1. Being on the water for a sunrise is the best! You can hear and see things that don't happen any other time. Nice catches. Wish I was there.

  3. I am impressed that you have so many different species of fish to search for with the fly rod. Looks like you are busy working those fish. Never caught a Carp on a fly, so the challenge awaits me. Do love me some Smallmouth Bass. Thanks for sharing.

By the way, could you please delete my old blog from your Blogroll and had my new one. Most appreciated!
