Water Snakes and Bass

I fished that pond I found a few weeks ago. I got a few players, but one was not of the finned variety. Poppers seem to work here but I may need to come back in the dark for those really big bass.

Cool colors on this serpent. She was a tad grumpy at my interrupting her shedding, and let me know as much...

  1. Fun times - good sized water snake. I find them to be the grumpiest of snakes in the north east... I've seen a couple copper heads, and they were down right affable (I guess they have supreme confidence), have not encountered a timber rattler - though an athlete I coach was bit in the shin by one late in a trail run in the blue hills near Boston!)... but I've yet to meet a water snake that seemed ok with you being round. The most bite first ask questions later snake I've known... Pretty as heck though!

    1. I've had an easier time moving copperheads then water snakes, but I was always far more scared when handling them, even though I was using a very long stick. As long as you wash the bite from a water snake you'll be fine.

  2. Nice bass pond and you caught some good ones. I tend to leave the snakes alone and in turn they leave me alone. I have seen more of them this year, probably because of all the rain we have had.
Tie, fish, write and photo on...

    1. Only one good one there. The snake was good too.

  3. Guess you had a little surf and turf (assuming the snake was caught on land)! I'm sure those hogs will come up for a mouse at night. That water snake was a beauty! I admire your bravery to handle it because I'm okay with snakes, but when it comes to handling them...screw that!

    1. Yup it was on land. In the water, they can outsmart me all day. But on land I win every time. Even if the toothy end gets attached to my leg.
