Pipe Residents, Dead Batteries, and Brook Trout

Guess where I caught this guy? Inside of that culvert! There's not much water in there, but just enough to hold a good smallmouth. He gave himself away by darting out to grab a bait fish. I skipped a cast into the tube and it took right away, giving the three weight a work out. There were a couple worrisome moments.

After landing a few bass, pickerel, and assorted panfish at the lake, I went mountain biking. I did not intend on finding a fishing spot, but two miles in I did. A small man made pool, holding a good amount of cold water, on a small stream I had rejected as one that could hold brookies while examining all those in my area a few years ago. Guess who was wrong? I caught four wild brook trout out of that pool, and there were plenty more there. The fourth was big and gorgeous, but when I went to take a picture the camera batteries died. That's OK, it's a private memory now, one I will replay over and over. What an evening.

  2. Surprise, surprise you can't take anything for granted. That small mouth is in a great ambush spot and the brookies can survive almost anywhere in ct.
Tie, fish, write and photo on...

    1. You wouldn't believe some of the perfect looking streams around here that DON'T hold brookies

  3. That smallie must've put the three weight to the test! Glad you stumbled upon some brookie water...your area has some great brook trout streams! While it is unfortunate that we didn't get to see that big brook trout, sometimes I find that by photographing a nice fish, we tend to not enjoy the moment as much, so sometimes it's okay not to get the shot. Plus it's less stress on the fish.

    1. Thanks,
I like to at least have pictures of the big ones. Preserving memories and what not. When, if ever, I have kids I want them to be able to see what the fishing was like when I was young.
