Brookies in the Rangeley, Chubs in Some Unnamed Streams

Two evenings ago I ventured into some small backwoods meadow streams to see if the contained wild brook trout. They did not, but they were far from fishless. Creek chubs were everywhere I looked. So was animal sign.

The next morning we headed to the Rangeley to look for some larger brook trout or landlocked salmon. We found some good fish both bellow "The Bathtub" and near the mouth, but nothing remarkable. A Parmachenee Wulff was my top fly.

In the afternoon my dad and I went up to the ponds and streams we fished on Sunday looking for some more brookies. The water had warmed and dropped, but I caught a few brookies in the first spring hole. There was an abundance of creek chubs, some were even decent sized. In one beaver poond we were getting takes constantly, there must have been thousands of fish in that one pool.

Nobody said fishing in Maine's backwoods is easy. Our next spot took a lot of work to reach, but boy did it pay of! Stay tuned for the next post involving that adventure.

  1. You are sure in the wilds of Main. Love the photo of the beaver dam! As you know, a little bit of mud never hurts a fisherman. Nice stories!! Keep them coming. I can imagine being there.
Tie, fish, write and photo on...
