This summer has been just awful. I never thought I'd see the Farmington River get bellow 60 CFS and above 75 degrees, but it has been. For a lot of the smaller streams I have legitimate fears of seeing nothing but dead, fish-less water this fall. I'm getting bored. I need some good fishing to happen and I need it to be consistent. I'm stuck in the rut of watching the water levels and weather forecast instead of planning long trips like I should be doing. It's bass season after all. I should be hammering big largemouth right now. Instead, I'm hammering dinky ones using big fish tackle... moderately entertaining but not at all what I was looking for.
After all, I don't fish 20lb straight leaders with and 8 wt's drag buttoned down tight and big weedless bass bugs hoping for small fish. It's fun to haul in three pound bass with that gear but pointing the rod at an eight inch fish and horsing it in does not give the same effect. At least I got some good numbers.
As you know, weather changes every year, so we make the best of what we have. I would say you are doing well with the numbers you are catching. Guess we just have to go with the flow.

The last few years are not an acceptable or natural change.
DeleteAgreed. Here in New England, I can't bear to look at the devastation this summer must've wrought on my streams that I'd normally fish in the fall. I'm glad that you have some spring fed streams that seem to have held up very well. Time for this fly fisherman to learn the salt.
