First Snowday

People ought to stop whining about how bad winter is here in New England. Our winter is very mild. I dare those that whine and complain about a CT winter to spend a year in northern Minnesota. Anyway, I love fishing in the winter, and I'm not talking ice fishing. Winter is one of the only time you can be almost assured of solitude on a CT trout stream. It is also often just drop dead gorgeous. Snow, running water, and deep dark forests are where I feel most at home. Second, the shoreline in warmer months; third, anywhere else fish live. And down there somewhere near the bottom of the list is 'indoors'.

So, even when the wind is ripping, the sky is cloudy and threatening, and the snow is sloppy and wet, I'd rather be testing the limits, trying to catch fish when they are least likely to eat.

  1. I agree, the only sounds to be heard are coming from nature and that is some nice music.
Tie, fish, write and photo on...

    1. Not in this area. I don't think there is a spot in CT anywhere that an airplane or car is not within earshot at all times. The constant hum of modern civilization is inescapable here.

    2. Your move to Montana will be a very large breath of fresh air. When do you leave?

    3. I'll be spending some time there next summer and all if all goes right, but I won't be moving out there for at least another year.

  2. Agreed, I don't understand the constant complaints about winter - it's a pretty time of year. A walk in the snowy woods is one of my favorite things. I would put a small counter-point to your post, however. Most would call CT 'New England' in a technical sense alone. Winter in most of New England (VT, NH, ME, most of MA) is pretty serious stuff.

    1. I agree completely, CT and RI are kept warmer by wind coming off the Mid Atlantic, and though I have not had the pleasure to spend time in ME or NH in the winter just the difference from the CT shoreline to the Northern border alone is often incredible.
