Last Trip of 2013

On New Years Eve day I traveled to a small stream that I believe holds brookies. It is beautiful and stays well shaded in the heat, so it would seem to be the perfect spot. Unfortunately that cold day did not end with me catching a fish. That isn't a bad thing, but regardless of how much many anglers try to prove that they do it for the sights and pleasure other than catching the fish, the purpose of wandering around a stream carrying a nimble rod and a box of flies is to see if you can't use those to fool a fish. Don't get me wrong, I love every aspect of being in the outdoors, even putting up with biting insects. If it weren't for catching fish I would still go hike and climb around the valleys, rivers, lakes, and forests; but without fishing tackle.

Anyway, the day was cold and ice created gorgeous bell-like formations where dead grass dangled in the water over a cut bank. Birds sang and a pack of coyotes joined the chorus for a few brief moments. All was well in my little world, regardless of the hum of planes and cars miles away. I left slightly disappointed that I had not landed a fish on the last trip of one of my best fishing years yet, but then I view every year that way. When the clock struck twelve, I was ready to challenge a new year and all of the great opportunities (both fishing and otherwise) that will come my way. I wish everyone a fine 2014 and much good fishing!

These things kept moving, and shivering is certainly no a photographers friend!

After fishing I saw this ridge and decided to check it out.
