Night Shift, May 2nd
This time of year the night trout fishing is limited to the first hour of darkness, mostly because the water conditions mean it makes more sense to eat during the day. So I fished all evening before getting in place on a few of my favorite pools for that short post-sunset madness. I caught some fish on nymphs and streamers, but nothing really special.
Once it was too dark to see a good sized dry and I could here fish crashing all around I tied on a Waller Waker. I got a lot of hits, some from very large fish, but only connected with one holdover brown. I'm sure my night will come, perhaps in June on the Beaverkill where the browns are big and wild and willing to take a large mouse off the surface.
