Panfish Preperations

I don't need to tell any of my frequent readers or friends that I LOVE big panfish. In most years I don't spend a lot of time preparing specificly for bluegill and crappie, but the other day I decided that it is in my best interest to streamline my fly selection and tie in bulk. I've narrowed my subsurface selection down two a small bucktail and a leech in different colors, and I'm going to be working on my poppers selection soon too. I'm hoping this will pay big time, anything that simplifies things is fantastic, and being that panfish are not the pickiest about specific types of flies I think narrowing my focus to color and depth is the best way to go.

I can't tell you how excited I am for the early panfish season. It's gonna be sweet for sure!

  1. Look out panfish, he is going to get you. Determination and a few good flies will catch them!
Tie, fish, write and photo on...

    1. So will no effort and a turd on a hook... but I'm not after every day panfish, mind you!

  2. I think simplifying is the name of the game whether for trout, bass or panfish. Otherwise we tend to overthink instead of trusting instincts.

    1. You are absolutely right. In most cases, the simpler the better.

My bluegill quest will begin in late February, all those patterns will produce especially during the spawn. As you know bluegill will try to kill anything that comes close to their spawning bed during that time of the year. I like to use my black spider early similar to your black pattern you have tied and of course chartreuse is always a killer early and throughout the year. Thanks for getting my bluegill addition pumped for the coming season.

    1. You're lucky for that, I've got until late March. I saw the post, that's some good stuff. I wish we had that many beasts in this neck of the woods!

    1. Yeah that'll be great!
I'm not sure, it has some current so normally it takes longer to freeze but I think the past few days have been enough to give it a coating.

  5. Nice ties the flash will certainly help get some attention. There are some good looking wets on the lid of the box too. I'm sure some brookies will be chomping those.
