One Carp, One Pickerel

Today seemed like a decent carp day. Turns out I was right, there where a few feeding fish and some static sun bathers scattered around the flat and I got one of those sun bathers to tip down for a small black Woolly Bugger. I had opted for light tippet today. Where as I usually use 1x, I was using 4x. I was also using the 10 ft. 5 wgt because I figured it would be better for preserving the light tippet. This fish woke up quick. It did a very long run with me chasing part of the way, I'd say 160 yards. Then it tried to get me into a fallen birch tree on the bank, a little more than the fly line's length away. It took me half an hour to get it t come back. It really wasn't even that big, maybe 28 inches. It did plenty to convince me that the 8 weight is pretty important for those really big fish. I did land it, my first carp n 4x. I'm going to downsize again for my next outing, using 5x. And maybe I'll get as low as 6 but I'm not reckless.

I decided to see how the pickerel were ding after that, but I managed only one on Scotties McFly before calling it quits. I'll be too busy tomorrow to fish, so enjoy a five day break from my posts. Five days of good weather an no fish an I'll be bouncing off the walls, the first day home should be 70 so you can expect something cool then. And may be a Farmington trip.

    1. Oh yeah... three years ago my arbor knot came undone and I lost an entire fly line to a 30lb carp.

    1. I only walked about 20 yards, the fish did most of the work here!

  4. Well done catching that 28"er. As Howard said above, I give you credit for chasing him that far. Not in my game plan any longer! Wish it was :).

    1. I didn't chase him that far or very fast. I just walked out a sand bar to keep the line clear of some rocks. I'm sure both of you could handle it ;)
