Fall is not the best time for me to fly fish for carp in my home lake. This fall, so far, is different; the most drastic difference being that the usual draw-down has not started. That means the shore-edge water is still deep enough that carp are comfortable feeding there. I saw only bubbling carp today, no tailing fish, but bubblers are perfectly catcheable fish. I hooked the first one I got a good clean shot at. I might add that I was using the ol' 10ft 5wt... I like that rod for smaller carp, and have caught one real giant on it, but after I lost a potential state record common this spring entirely because of that rod, I shied away from it.
This perfect and stunning carp had a couple minor mirror-like traits: It had a spot on either side that was scale-free, and the scales around that were interestingly shaped. The scales on the top of the head also seemed larger than normal. I wouldn't call it a true mirror in a million year but it gives me hope that I may run into one in the lake some day.
After annoyingly loosing two more carp I went looking for perch, and boy did I ever find them!
I also ran into a couple gorgeous smallmouth.
That was a good productive day. That Carp is beautiful and nice sized Bass. I hope those clouds dropped some rain!!!

Beautiful looking fish! What's the fly? Looks like a hot colored bead head bugger - correct? Good fall for fishing for sure!
