Circus Peanut Eaters

I don't know if you have ever eaten a circus peanut. If you haven't, maybe you should. But only one. As my Dad once said "they're so bad they're good". I'm not sure why they exist, but they do. I do know why a certain fly of the same name exists- it catches fish! It was tied by Russ Maddin, but often credit for it is given to Galloup. Don't get me wrong, Galloup ties killer patterns, but the Circus Peanut is hands down my favorite streamer for big trout. What makes it such a good fly? You'd have to ask Russ.
Today it was a top producer. I had a few taps on a Barely Legal but a black CP and a Brown CP were the winners. Adam caught a few nice brook trout using a crawler, bead, and spinner rig, and Dalton hooked what looked like a largemouth bass of all things. It was pretty even today between flies and bait. I definitely had more chases and nips, and probably a bit more fun with the fish , but who really cares? It was a fun day in good company.

Lure Scavenging

Another GoPro shot by Adam. This time the stick usage was not quite as well executed, but it wasn't too obvious, right. ; )

The only issue? We didn't have any circus peanuts to munch on.

  2. Saw you today at the parking area around 4. Not to be creepy haha. Anyways, I had good luck with a size 8 black wooly bugger below the 16 bridge. it felt good to get some in front of the spin fisherman... So just so you're in the loop: DEEP and I will be stocking your "home water" with the hordes of salmon fry on the 20th. Sorry about that... -Weightforward

    1. You should have stopped and said hello! We would have shared some dry oatmeal and soda with you!
I am perfectly OK with that. Most of my 100 fish days can be attributed to salmon fry! Plus I would love to see some adult salmon in there in twenty or thirty years. Maybe I'll come down and help.

Beautiful waters you were fishing; what weight fly rod are you using to cast the streamers? Colorful trout--thanks for sharing

    1. I was using an 8, but these flies cold be don with 6 or 7 weight rods fairly easily. I just like having that extra backbone for those moments when a 5 or 6in streamer is used.

  4. Nice fish and they look healthy. The water looks great, still merky here, but will be good by the weekend.
Well have to be fishing the bottom for sure. Circus are great if you don't have anything else to eat.
Tie, fish, write and photo on...

    1. You might as well just carry a jar of sugar around with you!

  5. It must still be fairly cold to have icey spots, but I am happy to see you had a great day with Dalton and Adam. Your pictures are great as usual. I would have liked to see a little longer video with the "Go Pro". Hope you do get to see adult salmon in there sooner than 20 years.

    1. Thank you,
It was very warm. The ice that has built up is mostly in shaded spots and is so thick it will take time to melt.
It isn't my GoPro, so I don't exactly have a say in that.
20 years is optimistic. It is likely that I will not see big salmon runs in these streams in my lifetime.

  7. Awesome trip with some beautiful river shots. Those circus nut streamers are pretty crazy looking, but they definitely seemed effective!
