On the Road Again

Early in June I caught my first fish in NY, one of the East's best states for fly fishing. And now I am going to be on the road again, this time headed north. I've caught wild brook trout in New Hampshire's White Mountains, but I have never fished in what is arguably the best state for wild brook trout: Maine. Tomorrow, it's northward bound, to the Rangeley area. Smallmouth, brook trout, landlocked salmon... it i not the best time of year to fish this area, but there are still opportunities and they have had more rain and cold temperatures. That means hex and brown drakes... and big brookies rising in rivers and ponds. I doubt that landlocked salmon will give much of a showing, but I'm certain that smallmouth will. I see an awesome week ahead...

Aside from fishing I will be  spending a lot of time at the vice, I have an order of 450 stimulators to send down to Dette Trout Flies in Roscoe NY. I've done 50 size 6 orange already, and 10 out of 0 black... that leaves quite a lot.

  1. Ooph, the challenge of commercial tying. I tried it once - probably when I was your age... I can hardly do 5 of the same fly in a sitting, so the commercial thing... after a month or so, it just sucked the joy out for me so I stopped. Hopefully it's not the same for you and helps you keep having more joy in fishing!

That said, heading to the Rangely area is awesome. If the trout are not on, the smallies should be... Bet you are in for an awesome fishing trip, and may get to see some moose, and bears as well! Happy 4th and enjoy the trip!

    1. Fortunately I have a long attention span and can just zone out and tie 25 in an hour. If I was any slower I wouldn't even try.
