Today I braved the heat and thunder storms on the lake, throwing a big articulated streamer at structure and using the jerk-strip retrieve, just as big streamer expert Kelly Galloup does for huge brown trout. I was using one of his patterns too, a white Heifer Groomer/Fat Head. The third cast the unweighted fly was smashed at the surface my a solid smallmouth, a beauty that fought as brilliantly as any of it's species does.
Although I nailed into a couple more smallmouth, the only other fish I caught and found photo worthy was this hungry and stunningly colorful sunfish. What a specimen!
Wow, what a Sunfish. Pretty aggressive, too, being bully enough to get after that big streamer.
ReplyDeleteFor what it is worth, Smallmouth Bass are just tough as can be on a fly rod!
One of the prettiest fish I've ever caught!
DeleteThe bass and bluegill are beauties. Your kayak didn't fill up with water, so it was a good outing. That pattern works very well.
ReplyDeleteTie, fish, write and photo on...
Thanks,
DeleteIt's actually a redbreast sunfish.
