Kicking Butt on the Farmington

Wait no that ain't right... It's "Getting Kicked in the Butt by the Farmington River".

I got to show RI Brook Trout around the Farmington on his first trip to that river. Unfortunately it didn't treat us very well. We spent the morning looking for wild brook trout and were totally unsuccessful in that respect.

Eventually we switched to throwing big streamers. We had at least some signs of life then. We both moved some really big browns, and I had some average fish chase and nip and various flies. Eventually a sizeable and very pretty rainbow killed the skunk.

After a little while we found a small stream which was more generous with it's bounty of wild browns and salmon parr. It's a place I'd like to visit in the fall some time.

Sometimes the river beats you, but do you really ever beat the river? I think not. I think the river is just occasionally generous.

Next time I fish the Farmington I hope most of the time will be spent in the dark, and that some of the flies, though they will float, will have no business being called dry flies. And may the fish be huge and wild.

  1. That' fishin... Sometimes you catchum and sometimes you don't. The rainbow was a beauty and you did good on the feeder stream. Nice trip!

  2. Just finished a mystery with several chapters set along the Farmington River. No fishing, tho. Glad you had a different experience there.

    1. The Farmington is a long river. Chances are the novel's events occurred some distance from where we were!

  3. Thanks for showing me around and for the streamer! Despite our low catch numbers, it was still a rewarding experience as I learned how to throw big streamers, and I got a follow from the largest trout I've ever seen in person. That +/- 30 incher who missed the take would've certainly made the day an instant success, but he'll be there for you next time. That rainbow is gorgeous; I didn't get to see it on the river. We definitely need to hit that stream again. I can't believe we literally stumbled upon a wtma!

I would guess that Farmington has a lot of fishing pressure, just like our tailrace here, I almost got skunked the other day on our Sipsey. It get tremendous fishing pressure. Thanks for sharing

    1. Much of it does, but many of the places we stopped at are well kept secrets.
