When The Fish Get Silly

As most of my readers probably already know, I love night fishing. There is something about the dark, the noises unidentified, the glow of stars and moon that makes for a surreal experience. Add to that the fact that trout feed with reckless abandon at night and you've really got something.

Last night Ben Bilello and I met and fished a popular pool on a pressured river when the fishing is actually good. We caught fish on flies that trout wouldn't even peek at during the day. Bombers, huge stoneflies, big streamers... my best producer was a popper. Neither of us got into any really big fish, but it was fun as can be to see the kinds of things they'll eat at night.

  1. That's interesting. I have never fished for trout at night. I guess they can still see what is happening. That fisherman above you knows when to fish.
Tie, fish, write and photo on...

    1. See, feel, hear, it doesn't matter. They are night feeders!

  2. Can't believe you got trout on poppers! I heard that a mouse fly works well on big browns at night. I just bought one and am testing it on bass today, but eventually I want to try it on the salmon some time.

    1. Me neither, and if poppers will work, mice will too!
If you want to try the Salmon at night it needs to be soon (warming water). If you can get permission from the fam we could do a dusk till dawn trip. My porch is open if you need a place to sleep! It's definitely safer to do a whole night trip with company.

  4. When I was younger, I spent a few nights out on the lakes after dark in my float tube. You are so correct with listening to all the different sounds you can hear. Top that off with the fact that trout can be much more aggressive in the dark and fishing can be fun. Some bigger trout come out to play for sure being more willing with no sun beating down on them.
