Flies for the New Season

Each change in weather brings a need for new techniques. The coming of fall means some fun stuff is going to be happening. I always promise myself that I'll fish for broodstock Atlantic salmon. I'm making that top priority, as well as toughing the fall run of sea trout. Spring is a pain in the butt, I hear that fall is even tougher. But just maybe I can eek out some silver.

Already beginning is the aggressive pre-spawn behaviors of large brown trout and brookies. On the brown side of things that means mice and streamers for BIG fish. Farmington trips to come, hopefully.

Kelly Galloup's Peanut Envy

Tommy Lynch's Drunk and Disorderly

On small streams fall and early winter means nymphs and egg patterns for some of the biggest wild brown trout  in the river. I'm talking 10-20 inchers out of small top mid sized rivers. Not a glorious or romantic way to fish, but it sure gets the job done! Of course I'll be using dries and small streamers for stunningly colored brook trout in the coming monthes as well.

  2. Fall certainly is a great time of year for angling and a relief after this dry summer (a delicate time as well because avoiding stepping in streams and ruining redds is a must). Can't wait to see what you pull out of the streams with this killer assortment...love that drunk and disorderly streamer! If I can find time, we most certainly need to get out there...too many things going on right now!

    1. Thanks,
I love watching fish on their redds. I have just sat and watched for as much as an hour at a time. But I try my best to leave them alone.
We'll go at some point. And we need to get up to the Farmington too, for big brookies and browns.

  4. Rowan looking at your fall assortment, which looks very nice and should do you well. But one fly is missing, and I believe is very much an outstanding fall pattern.
    Check my next post.
