Finally it's actually looking like winter around these parts, and I really didn't feel like falling down a lot today so I didn't go fishing.
But I was looking at BRK TRT's most recent post and he made an observation about a wild brown trout's fins and that started me thinking about the colors on wild trout. So I took a bunch of photos of wild brown trout from this year and cropped them to show the variety of color patterns found in one trout species.
Do the spots turn red or do they turn all brown eventually? They are so colorful matching their habitat.
ReplyDeleteTie, fish, write and photo on...
That second fish is a 20 incher and it had some of the brightest red I've ever seen, and my first 20+ had huge red spots, but I've also seen plenty big browns with all black spots. It depends on the fish, really, but I'm not sure their spots ever change from black to red or red to black.
DeleteGreat collection of photos, and you're right, it is interesting how the spots vary on the browns. I have seen some with very few spots at all.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
DeleteBrown trout are some of the prettiest fish in the world... but they still don't beat brookies.
First off Rowan you made a good choice on not fishing....it was slippery out there.
ReplyDeleteThe colors on the brown as well as the spots are because the fish are different strains of brown trout. They may color up at the time of spawning to enhance.
I figured.
DeleteYeah I've seen 4 distinct strains just in the Farmington.
